Concert at the LACMA Museum January 11th 2009:

Listen to the complete live recording track n.18:

"The Capitol band consists of rotating players, all of whom are of a high caliber. Violinist Phillip Levy is its ubiquitous member and putative leader.

This concert featured David Low on cello and French pianist (now LA resident) Francois Chouchan.

A spirited reading of Haydn's Piano Trio in A (op. 70, no. 1) opened the concert. The new year is the Year of Papa Haydn, 2009 being the bicentenary of his death. The composer seems never to disappoint. Levy and Chouchan continued with 'Sospiri' (op. 70) by Elgar, a poignant work possessing all the emotional punch that a musical work with 'sighs' as its title might suggest.

The trio concluded with Beethoven's Piano Trio in C minor (op. 1, no. 3). The work opens with subtle tones and temperament, leading to a second movement of variations that requires tremendous pianistic skill and precision. The final movement's sublimity ends in hushed tones following a virtuosic display by the trio.

A most satisfying (and free!) concert".
